KS3

Students receive one P.E. lesson and one Sport Lesson, both of one hour duration per week. The emphasis is on students gaining a solid knowledge and understanding of key concepts in order to develop further in KS4.

The units followed in Key Stage 3 cover the following activities:

PE:  Handball, Badminton, Multi Skills, Leadership in Football, Gymnastics, Tennis, Table tennis, Fitness, Gymnastics, Basketball, Tennis, Cricket,

Sport: Football, Basketball, Tag Rugby, Fitness, Athletics, Cricket and Rounders.

 

Year 7

During Year 7 students will focus on acquiring and developing new skills.  The emphasis is on giving students the chance to experience a broad range of activities and to begin to understand the body and the effect exercise and activity has on it.  Students will be assessed in these activities through both teacher and peer assessments during lessons.

 

Year 8

Students will be looking to build on the knowledge gained in Year 7 and to begin to select and apply specific skills, techniques and tactics in order to transfer these skills that are being developed across a range of different activities. Once again, students will find varied forms of assessment within the subject with Personal Learning Projects (PLPs), peer and self-assessment as well as teacher based assessment.

 

KS4

Physical Education Cambridge National Certficate Sports Studies OCR J813

Sport and exercise is growing in popularity year on year. Understanding how to exercise and keep healthy has become an integral part of enjoying a long and happy life. Understanding how to get the best out of yourself and importantly, interacting with others and gaining confidence are key traits that can be learnt through sport and are required in the wider world. Sport enables you to build these key qualities and develop as a human being ‐ contributing positively to society. Sport can open up a huge range of avenues for you as a student and as an adult for years to come.

Practical performance

Housing major sporting events

Barriers to participation

National Governing bodies

Plan and lead coaching sessions

Video analysis

Assessment:

Unit 1 – Contemporary Issues in Sport.

Unit 2 – Developing Sports Skills.

Unit 3 – Sports Leadership.

Unit 4 – Sport in the Media. Unit 1 is a 60 minute written exam paper.

Units 2, 3 and 4 are coursework and evidence units.

Course Progression:

Following successful completion of this course students will be able to follow an ‘A’ Level in Sports Studies or Sports Science which can lead onto a University degree or a BTEC National Level 3 both of which can lead to a University degree course.

Careers:

The skills developed studying OCR Sports Studies lend themselves to a wide range of careers but in particular these skills are valued by employers in industries / organisations that specialise in:‐ Sports coaching, sports nutrition, physiotherapy, the leisure industry, swimming instructor, gym instructor, personal trainer, media, sports development, working within a sporting authority, P.E. teaching, sports masseuse and much more.
