Aims

At KS3, students study French as their main language and are also introduced to a second language of either German or Spanish. The aim of the department is for students to become confident speakers of a foreign language. Lessons are always interactive and include lots of group work.

 

Year 7

Students will learn to communicate using and understanding full sentences and dialogue. Students give opinions and descriptions about themselves, their family, their leisure interests, where they live and their school life.

 

Year 8

Students will continue to develop their linguistic skills, by giving more complicated opinions and justifying them. Pupils will learn to use the future tense to talk about things they plan to do, like visiting a foreign country. Students will also learn to talk about events in the past, demonstrating a knowledge of the perfect tense.

KS4

French GCSE AQA 8658

Success in French demonstrates a wide range of qualities; confidence, resilience, problem solving and much more. This can lead to a wide range of careers with an international dimension, but also develops skills which can be applied in a variety of contexts, for example the ability to give a clear presentation, or to decode a text. Speaking a foreign language creates opportunities to travel, to communicate with more people, to give yourself a significant advantage over people who cannot speak a foreign language. There are many companies based in the West Midlands who have strong links with companies in French speaking countries.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed in the four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, in either the Foundation or Higher Tier. Listening Written Exam in 2 parts. A - Questions in English, B - Questions in French. Speaking Role Play, Describe a Photo, General Conversation Reading Written Exam in 3 parts. A - Questions in English, B - Questions in French, C - Translation (French - English) Writing Structured Written Tasks, Translation (English - French)

Course Progression:

A GCSE in French is a pre-requisite to study ‘A’ Level French. A GCSE in French is very desirable as an entry requirement for many university courses and can also lead to opportunities to live and work abroad. There are opportunities to continue studying French alongside many other subjects at degree, e.g. Law with French, European Studies (History with French) and many more.

Careers:

The ability to speak French would support any career working for a large company. Typical careers involving languages include:- Journalism, Sales Executive, Tour Manager, Transport and Logistics, International Aid/Development, Government Services, Espionage, Engineering, Teaching English as a Foreign Language and many more.
