Aims

KS3 Geography offers an exciting and current way to look at the World today.  Students will investigate geographical issues on a local and global scale. The department has planned a joint Humanities course for Year 7 students and a concept based approach for Years 8 & 9.

 

Year 7

Students will students develop their geographical skills; investigating the micro climate in our local area, why people migrate to the UK and what our cities look like. In addition to this the pupils will also complete three integrated Humanities units that contain elements of History, Geography and RE.

 

Year 8

Students will explore the new developments in renewable energy and how fossil fuels are creating world wide problems. Students will have an opportunity to further develop their field work skills investigating how the River Rea works in our local environment. They will also work on patterns and places through country based projects on Italy and China.

KS4

Geography GCSE AQA 8035

Geography is viewed by employers as a key indicator of students with all-round ability. It involves use of language, mathematics and data analysis. Geography continuously provides opportunities for developing important skills including ICT, GIS technology, presentation and problem solving. Geography gives students a broad knowledge and understanding of the world around them. As part of this Geography GCSE course, students will undertake two fieldtrips focusing on both human and physical elements and the interaction between these. The investigations carried out will form the basis of the paper 3 assessment.

Students studying Geography will:

Study physical processes and how they produce diverse and dynamic landscapes over time.

Learn about the interdependence of physical environments and the interaction between people and the environment

Receive balanced and manageable coverage of both Physical and Human Geography.

Unit 1: Living with the Physical Environment Written Paper – 1 hour 30 mins – 88 marks – 35% Unit 2: Challenges in the Human Environment Written Paper – 1 hour 30 mins – 84 marks – 35% Unit 3: Geographical Applications Written Paper—1 hour 15 mins – 76 marks – 30%

Course Progression:

The obvious progression from GCSE Geography is to complete an ‘A’ Level course in Geography. The AQA GCSE course naturally builds into the AQA ‘A’ Level course by enhancing the foundation of skills built at GCSE. This course lays an appropriate foundation for further study of geography or related subjects. Geography GCSE provides a worthwhile course for candidates from diverse backgrounds in terms of general education and lifelong learning.
