AIMS
Through Art and Design, students will experience working in a variety of materials both in 2 and 3 dimensions. Starting points will be from direct observation; personal experience and memory; imagination and from the art of different cultures and eras.
Care is taken that themes cover a range of subjects from the natural and the man-made world, to provide a balanced diet of inspiration, relating where possible to students own interests and current trends.
Emphasis is on the learning of procedures and how to control a wide variety of media, and through experimentation, the development of individual techniques to aid the confident use of imagination and originality.
The main disciplines to be covered are Painting & Drawing; Printmaking; Textiles; Ceramics; & other 3D work. Information technology skills and the use of computer software are encouraged where appropriate.
Year 7
During year 7 students will look at the following stimulus starting points:
Lettering, Aboriginal Art, Gaudi, Julian Opie and Picasso Portraits.
Year 8
During Year 8 students will look at the following stimulus starting points:
The art work of David Hockney, Banksy graffiti art portraits, Heraldry, Keith Haring and Anthony Gormley Statues and figures.
KS4
Art GCSE OCR J171
Art and design allows students to build the confidence to work independently. Students have to be able to show how the world around them inspires their ideas and in turn creates beautiful, controversial and challenging artwork. Through this work, students have to be confident to explore and develop their own personal concepts and explain their design strategy as their projects develop.

Assessment:
Throughout the three years of study students will work on the following 2 components:- Component 1 - Personal Portfolio. This area of study will be worth 60% of the course content. (coursework). Component 2 - Externally Set Assignment. This area of study will be worth 40% of the course content. (exam). Both components are marked out of 120 total available marks. This is broken down into the following 4 learning objectives:- AO1- Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources. AO2 - Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. AO3 - Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses. AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.
Course Progression:
Many students go on to study Art & Design and other creative courses at college and university. By completing a GCSE in Art, students will produce a portfolio of high quality art work that can be used to showcase their skills. Students will develop creative thinking and problem solving skills. Art and Design students have a strong ability to work independently and develop original concepts and ideas that relate to the world around themselves.
Careers:
Students may go onto to develop successful careers in the creative and design based industries or by starting their own small business. Others may choose to train as teachers in Art or Design. Many go on to develop successful careers as practicing artists or diversify in creative fields such as Illustration, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Photography, Tattoo Design, Architecture, Furniture Design, Garden and Landscape Design, Web and Game Design.
